It will always be “savaged” on the title so people don’t ripped off if they buy it from you.
And, yes, it is legal to drive.

You can’t get a clean title, but yes, you can repair, license and drive it. You can also sell it, but a salvage title really drops the price.
Depending on your state rules, you can apply for a new title at your motor vehicles department. In some cases, you will have to provide proof that the vehicle is ‘road ready’ before a new title is issued. Also, be aware that a title history will continue to show the vehicle at one time was issued a salvage title and it can easily be researched thru CarFax or similar research agents.
Once you have a salvage title it will always be a salvage title. When the cost of reparing a car is higher than it’s value the title is changed to a salvage title. This is to prevent consumers from buying a seriously damaged car unknowingly.
The purpose of a salvage title is to protect the consumer. You wouldn’t want to buy a new car and then later find out that it was in a catastrophic accident, would you? Well, there are plenty of unethical people out there that would be willing to fix up a salvaged car and sell it without telling anyone. This is why salvage title’s exist. You can repair and drive a car with a salvage title, Depending on where you live, you will probably need to have the vehicles inspected once it is repaired. But the title will always say “salvage”
In Indiana you fix the car, then apply for a “rebuilt” title.
It’s still a “branded” title, but the car can be legally registered & driven.
It depends on the law for your state. Generally speaking if a car has been wrecked and totaled by the insurance company, it gets a salvage title that stays with it for the life of the vehicle. In some states a salvage title means it can not be driven, but sold for parts only. Other states have a mechanism where it can be repaired and inspected and given plates again, but the salvage title stays in place or a new “Rebuilt” title is issued.
Apparently some states are lax, because a lot of cars that were flood damaged in New Orleans are out there with new clear titles.
salvage title means just that, in illinois if its a salvage title, the vehicle is/was not meant to be driven any long. good for parts only
