What’s the best way to legally get rid of a car?

Question by Lionheadz: What’s the best way to legally get rid of a car?
Not looking for a scam, just have a 97 ford ranger that probably just blew the head gasket. Everything else is working okay, but I know I can’t afford the repairs and live on the bus route so I need to get rid of it.

Don’t think I could sell it as parts, only thing new on it is the starter, I put that in last month, everything else pretty old. MA has a lemon law and I don’t think they let you sell a car “as parts” here anyways, at least no privately, they won’t stop me, it just means the person could make me take it back a month down the road.

Will a scrap yard pay anything for it, even if its only 50 bucks, hey I’d take 5 bucks if thats the highest offer.

I lost the title so I’m already gonna have to dish out 50 bucks to the registry just to junk it, had a real hard time junking a previous car without the title, but after callin around I got company to do it, they guy just stated that it better legally be titled to me.
Someone told me places will pay you to take it, I was just happy to get rid of the old one cause I was young and in a hurry, but now I can let this one sit awhile, will a company really pay to take a dead truck off my property?

Here in San Diego, we give it to charities and they will pick it up themselves and you can file it in your taxes. Do you have anything like this in your area?

call a junk yard, some will give you $50-100 for it, you can find a local one in your yellow pages. Or donate it to a local charity and use it as a tax right off.

Most dumpes will take cars for $50. You could also try and donate it.

  • JetDoc:

Find a local high school or junior college who has an auto maintenance/repair class, and donate it to them. Then you can take the full book value of the truck as a tax write-off.

if you donate the truck and still have the receipt of how much you paid and spent on the truck you may want to donate and deducted on your taxes but i would sugest you to donate it to a school like jet suggested

Someone will buy your truck if you choose to sell it. Replacing a head gasket isn’t that hard for an experienced mechanic. Depending on what shape the truck is on, it may be worth more in parts. Truck beds alone sell for $400 to $800. There are companies that will come take away your truck. Just look in the yellow pages in the automotive section.
